Wheel of Names
Add names or choices, spin the wheel and select a random winner instantly.
What Is a Wheel of Names?
A Wheel of Names is an online random name picker that selects one person, item or choice from a list. You add your entries to the wheel, press the Spin button and wait for the pointer to reveal the selected winner.
It works like drawing a folded name from a hat, but the digital spinning wheel makes the selection easier to see, quicker to repeat and more entertaining for everyone involved.
Although it is commonly called a name wheel, you are not limited to people’s names. You can enter numbers, teams, tasks, prizes, foods, classroom topics, activities, questions or almost any other set of choices.
How to Use the Wheel of Names
The random name wheel is designed to work without a complicated setup. You can create and spin your first wheel in a few simple steps.

Popular Ways to Use a Random Name Picker
A name spinner can make random selection feel more open, visual and enjoyable. Here are some practical situations where the wheel can help.
Classroom Participation
Teachers can enter student names and randomly select someone to answer a question, present their work, read aloud or complete a classroom task.
Raffles and Giveaways
Add participant names, ticket numbers or usernames and spin the giveaway wheel to pick a contest winner in front of your audience.
Team Meetings
Use the random picker to choose a meeting host, assign the next speaker, select an icebreaker participant or distribute small tasks.
Party and Group Games
Choose who goes first, who answers the next question, who joins a challenge or which activity the group plays next.
Chores and Task Assignment
Enter household jobs, team responsibilities or project tasks and allow the wheel spinner to make an impartial selection.
Choices and Decisions
Replace names with restaurants, movies, meals, travel ideas or weekend activities whenever you need a random choice.
What Can You Put on the Wheel?
Each wheel segment represents one entry. Because an entry can contain a name, word, number or short phrase, the tool can be adapted to many different activities.
People and Participants
Student names, employees, team members, players, contestants, customers or giveaway participants.
Numbers and Positions
Ticket numbers, presentation order, player order, tournament positions or numbered prizes.
Tasks and Activities
Classroom questions, household chores, exercises, discussion topics, challenges or project tasks.
Everyday Choices
Meals, restaurants, movies, games, destinations, colors, hobbies or weekend plans.
How Does the Random Selection Work?
Every active entry is placed on the wheel as a separate segment. When you start a spin, the tool uses a random value generated inside your browser to select one entry from the current list.
The participant list is read
Blank lines are ignored and the remaining names become available wheel entries.
One entry is randomly selected
Each standard entry has the same opportunity to be chosen during that spin.
The wheel animates to the result
The colorful spinning animation builds suspense before the selected name is shown.
Each new spin is treated separately. A name that won previously can be selected again unless you remove it from the wheel or enable automatic winner removal.
Use Elimination Mode for Unique Winners
Sometimes you need to choose several different people without selecting the same participant twice. For example, you may be drawing three raffle prizes, assigning turns to students or creating a speaking order.
Enable the option labelled “Remove the selected winner after each spin.” After a name is chosen, it will automatically be removed from the active wheel before the next draw.
You can also leave this option disabled and use the Remove Winner button manually. This gives you time to confirm the result before changing the participant list.
Why Use an Online Name Wheel?
Clear Visual Selection
Everyone can watch the spinner turn and see which segment reaches the pointer.
Quick List Editing
Add, remove, shuffle or replace participant names without rebuilding a physical wheel.
Works on Different Devices
The responsive interface adapts to mobile phones, tablets, laptops and desktop screens.
No Account Required
Open the tool, add your entries and begin spinning without completing a registration form.
Supports Different Entry Types
Use names, numbers, prizes, foods, questions, tasks or any other short choices.
Recent Winner History
Review the most recent results during your current page session.
Wheel of Names vs Drawing Names from a Hat
Both methods can select one entry from a group, but an online spinning wheel provides extra controls that are difficult to reproduce with paper slips.
| Feature | Wheel of Names | Names in a Hat |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Paste or type a list | Write and fold every name |
| Changing entries | Edit the list instantly | Replace paper slips manually |
| Removing winners | Automatic or manual removal | Remove the selected slip |
| Duplicate checking | Remove duplicates with one button | Check every slip manually |
| Result history | Recent winners are displayed | Results must be recorded separately |
| Audience experience | Colorful spinning animation | Traditional physical draw |
Does the Wheel Save My Names?
The current version stores your active entry list in the local storage of the browser you are using. This allows your names to appear again when you revisit the page on the same browser and device.
The list is not automatically shared between different browsers, computers or mobile devices. Clearing browser storage may also remove the saved entries.
The recent winner history is intended for the current page session. Refreshing or closing the page may clear the displayed history.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Wheel of Names free to use?
Yes. You can enter your own names and spin the wheel without paying for individual selections or creating an account.
How many names can I add?
This version of the tool accepts up to 200 entries. Very large lists will create thinner wheel segments, but every active entry can still be selected.
Can I paste names from Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes. Copy a column containing the names and paste it into the entry box. Keep one name on each line, then press Update Wheel.
Can I use commas between names?
Yes. The tool can read names separated by new lines or commas.
Can the same person win more than once?
Yes, unless you remove the winner after the spin. Enable automatic winner removal when you need several unique winners.
Why should I remove duplicate names?
Each duplicate creates an additional wheel entry. Removing duplicates helps ensure that every participant appears only once.
Can I use words or numbers instead of names?
Yes. You can use numbers, tasks, foods, prizes, activities, questions or other short text entries.
Does the wheel work on mobile phones?
Yes. The layout is responsive and can be used on phones, tablets, laptops and desktop computers.
Are my names uploaded publicly?
The tool operates inside your browser and stores the active list locally on the same browser. Avoid entering private or sensitive information into any public or shared device.
Can I use the wheel for raffles and giveaways?
Yes. Add the eligible participant names or ticket numbers, remove duplicates and spin the wheel to select a winner. Make sure your contest also follows any rules or laws that apply to your giveaway.
